What is Remastering?
‘Remastering’ is the process of mastering a stereo mix that has either been previously mastered, or in the case of some early digital classical and jazz recordings, never been mastered before.
We remaster from Digital Sources - CD, Wav Files, Digital Tape (DAT or DTRS) - at high resolution (standardly 24/96) - through our state of the art Analogue Chain, and deliver Digital Master Files for streaming (wav or FLAC) or vinyl pressing (wav) at any samples rate up to 192k.
The sole aim of Nuance Re-Mastering
is fully to optimise the sound quality.
nuance re-mastering elements
1. Increases clarity and atmosphere and enables a better delineation of musical lines.
2. Re-naturalises musical textures.
3. Restores the natural dynamics of a recording.
4. Sonic restoration/noise reduction (e.g. both background noise and performance related).
5. Higher-resolution masters which sonically outperform merely upsampled masters.

introduction to nuance re-mastering
Because there are no material costs involved, and no overheads for recording, mixing and production,
Nuance Re-Mastering is a highly cost-effective way of revivifying dormant elements of a back catalogue for re-launching e.g. on streaming platforms,
At Philosophers Barn we can re-engineer any classical or jazz project to reveal its full sonic potential and to deliver genuinely higher-resolution master files for streaming or vinyl pressing.
state of the art mastering tools
We use the very best analogue tools for mastering - designed and built by (classical = jazz) musicians. These are clear and detailed and timbrally complete.
The Re-Mastering director had a short undistinguished career as a jazz saxophonist, but also a distinguished 25-year record as a classical engineer e.g. for ASV, Black Box, Decca, SOMM and Sony, as well as for many independent musicians.
Recent mastering work with contemporary classical composers include: Richard Allain, Kim Arnesen, Leo Chadburn and Umitaro Abe (with the NHK Orchestra); with jazz from Breve (John Taylor), Mark Cherrie, Mick Hutton and Ivan Hussey
